Description
The Reliant Lab Searle’s Thermal Conductivity Apparatus is a high precision thermodynamic instrument designed to determine the coefficient of thermal conductivity for highly conductive materials, specifically copper. The setup features a solid 18mm diameter copper rod housed within a thermally insulated wooden jacket to minimize radial heat loss. One end of the rod is heated by a steam chamber, while the other is cooled by a constant flow water jacket. By measuring the temperature gradient along the rod using two thermometers and the heat absorbed by the cooling water, the rate of heat transfer through the metal can be calculated with high accuracy.
Features
:- Solid 18mm Copper Specimen: Features a high purity, 18mm thick copper rod that provides a robust cross sectional area for stable linear heat flow.
- Insulated Steam Chamber: One end of the rod is encased in a chrome plated brass steam chest for efficient and uniform high temperature input.
- Differential Thermometry: Equipped with four thermometer pockets to ensure precise data collection.
- Minimal Heat Loss: The entire length of the rod is enclosed in a felt-lined wooden box, ensuring that heat flow is predominantly one dimensional.
Applications
:- Coefficient of Thermal Conductivity: Primarily used in physics labs to calculate the absolute thermal conductivity of copper using the steady state method.
- Steady State Analysis: Demonstrates the concept of thermal equilibrium, where the rate of heat entry equals the rate of heat exit.
- Material Science Education: Used to teach students how the molecular structure of metals facilitates efficient energy transfer via free electrons.
- Thermodynamic Research: Investigating the relationship between temperature gradients and heat flow rates in conductive solids.
