Description
The Reliant Lab Lee’s and Charlton’s Apparatus is a specialized thermodynamic instrument used to determine the coefficient of thermal conductivity of bad conductors or insulating materials. This specific variation utilizes heavy duty iron plates instead of the traditional brass. The apparatus operates by sandwiching a thin disc of the test material between a steam heated iron chamber and a solid iron base plate. By measuring the temperature of both plates at a steady state and then observing the cooling rate of the iron base, the material's ability to resist heat flow can be precisely calculated.
Features
:- Heavy Iron Base Plate: Features a thick, circular iron slab that acts as a stable heat sink with a high thermal mass for consistent cooling data.
- Corrosion Resistant Finish: The iron components are typically treated with a heat resistant coating to prevent oxidation and ensure long-term durability in steam heavy environments.
- Triple String Suspension: The entire assembly is suspended by low-conductivity silk or nylon threads to minimize parasitic heat loss to the surrounding stand.
- Optimized Thermal Contact: The mating surfaces are precision machined to be perfectly flat, ensuring maximum contact with the test disc for accurate heat flux measurement.
Applications
:- Conductivity of Insulators: The primary tool for measuring the value of poorly conducting solids like rubber, plastic, cork, or glass.
- Comparison of Materials: Allows students to compare the thermal resistance of different industrial and construction insulators.
- Specific Heat Capacity Calibration: Used in advanced physics labs to determine the specific heat of the iron plate as a variable for the conductivity formula.
- Industrial Safety Testing: Evaluating the effectiveness of thin film insulators used in electrical and mechanical housing.
