Description
The Reliant Lab Bar Breaking Apparatus is a classic strength of materials demonstration tool used to illustrate the immense forces generated by thermal expansion and contraction. The device consists of a heavy cast iron frame with a thick steel rod that is heated and then secured with a brittle "cast iron pin" or "breaking bar." As the heated rod cools and contracts, it exerts a massive longitudinal force on the pin, eventually snapping it with a loud, dramatic crack. This provides a visceral, high impact lesson on the mechanical power of thermal physics.
Features
:- Heavy Duty Cast Iron Frame: A rigid, high mass base designed to withstand the extreme mechanical stress of the contracting rod without deforming.
- High Tensile Steel Rod: A precision machined rod with a threaded end and a large wing nut to allow for manual tensioning before cooling.
- Integrated Heating Source: Usually used in conjunction with a Bunsen burner or high output blowtorch to achieve significant thermal expansion of the main rod.
- Safety Shield Compatibility: The design often includes mounting points for a transparent protective shield to contain the fragments of the pin upon breaking.
Applications
:- Thermal Contraction Demonstration
- Materials Testing Education
- Structural Engineering Concepts
- Calculation of Young’s Modulus
- Force and Stress Analysis
