Description
The Reliant Lab Coefficient of Linear Expansion Apparatus is a classic thermodynamics instrument used to accurately measure how much a solid material specifically brass elongates when subjected to a change in temperature. The apparatus consists of a hollow brass tube mounted on a sturdy metal frame. One end of the tube is fixed, while the other is free to expand against a high precision dial gauge or a micrometer screw. Steam is passed through the hollow pipe to raise its temperature uniformly, and the resulting minute increase in length is measured to calculate the linear expansion coefficient.
Features
:- Hollow Brass Construction: The test specimen is a hollow pipe, allowing steam to circulate internally for rapid and uniform heating of the entire metal surface.
- High Precision Dial Indicator: Features a sensitive dial gauge to capture the microscopic longitudinal expansion of the brass.
- Integrated Steam Inlets: Equipped with secure serrated nozzles for the easy attachment of rubber tubing from a steam generator or boiler.
- Heavy Duty Support Base: Mounted on a rigid, warp-resistant metal channel that prevents external mechanical flex from interfering with the expansion data.
Applications
:- Material Science Testing: Comparing the expansion rates of brass against other metals like steel or aluminum to understand alloy behavior.
- Thermodynamics Research: Studying the relationship between internal molecular kinetic energy and macroscopic physical dimensions.
- Calibration of Sensors: Used to test the accuracy of industrial displacement sensors and micrometers under controlled thermal conditions.
- Civil Engineering Prep: Demonstrating why architectural components require gaps to prevent structural buckling during seasonal temperature shifts.
