The apparatus consists of a central compass box mounted on a long non magnetic wooden or plastic base. The compass box contains a small, sensitive magnetic needle pivoted on a frictionless point, with a long thin aluminum pointer attached perpendicular to it. Two graduated wooden arms extend from the center, allowing for the precise placement of bar magnets at specific distances from the needle to observe the deflection.
