The KG4-P-3.5AS model from Kirloskar’s Portable Sentinel series is a compact diesel-powered generator set rated at approximately 3.5 kVA (single-phase, 230 V / 50 Hz). It is designed for portable or standby power use where a small-capacity diesel alternative is desirable.
Features
:- Rated capacity : ~3.5 kVA at 230 V/50Hz single phase.
- Fuel type : Diesel engine (as indicated for “3.5 kVA Diesel Inverter” category)
- Fuel tank capacity : 12.5 L
- Consumption : For the 3.5 kVA model: approx. 1.1 Lt/Hr (At 100% Load) /0.93 Lt/Hr (At 75% Load) / 0.78 Lt/Hr (At 50% Load)
- Voltage output : 230 V single-phase (standard for small portable sets)
- Low noise / compact footprint : Spec shows “Sound Level LWA / dB(A) < 75 dB(A)” for this size.
- Portable build : Designed for mobility and practical use in smaller installations or where minimal footprint is needed. Brochures mention “Power on Wheels … mobile power backup … wide length handle … wheels” for this size range.
- Output quality : According to the spec sheet, THD (voltage) less than 5% for similar models in the series.
- Brand & support : Kirloskar has a wide service network in India, which adds to the appeal from a maintenance & support perspective.
Applications
:Home backup power : For residences during power outages, to run lighting, fans, TV, smaller refrigerators or other essential appliances.
-
Small business / shop backup : For small retail shops, kiosks, clinics, salons, offices where a few kVA of reliable backup power is required.
-
Outdoor/mobile operations : Such as remote site lighting, field workshops, small events, mobile vendors, small construction jobs that require moderate power.
-
Agricultural/light rural use : In rural areas or farms where grid supply is unstable or absent; for portable pumps, lighting, small motors (within load limits).
-
Because of its size (~3.5 kVA), it is not designed for large industrial motors or three-phase heavy loads, but rather for lighter single-phase loads or standby usage.
Usage
:Usage :
- Install the generator on a level, dry, and well-ventilated outdoor site, ensuring exhaust fumes are away from inhabited spaces and adequate clearance is provided.
Before first start (and before every subsequent use):
Check engine oil level, coolant level (if water-cooled), battery charge (if electric start) and fuel level.- Ensure that all cables and loads are disconnected, and that the generator’s control panel is set to standby/ready mode.
On starting :
Start engine without load, allow it to warm up for a minute or two.- Gradually apply load; avoid connecting full load instantly after cold start.
- Monitor the voltage and frequency; ensure that the load does not exceed the rated capacity (approx. 3.5 kVA) and allow margin for starting surges of motors.
During operation :
Maintain clean surrounding and ensure ventilation around generator is not obstructed.- Monitor fuel consumption, engine temperature, and listen for unusual noises or vibration.
- If powering sensitive electronics, ensure protection via a UPS or AVR (even though output THD is low) to guard against transients.
When shutting down :
Remove load first, let the generator run unloaded or lightly loaded for 1–2 minutes to stabilize.- Then turn off the generator, allow it to cool, and if storing for longer period, drain fuel if recommended by manufacturer or treat fuel as per guidance.
- Ensure proper grounding and circuit protection (breaker/fuse) is in place, and wiring is appropriate for the load.
Maintenance :
Oil change : According to spec sheet: First oil change after ~20 hours, then every 100 hours (for this portable series) for petrol variants; for diesel variants the period may differ but likely similar interval.
-
Air filter : Regularly inspect the air filter (especially if used in dusty or outdoor environment); clean or replace as required.
-
Fuel system : Use good quality diesel fuel. If the generator is unused for long periods, treat or drain fuel to avoid degradation. Check for leaks or contamination.
-
Battery / electric-start system : Ensure battery remains charged, terminals clean and tight, and that connections are secure.
-
Cooling / ventilation : If air-cooled, ensure fins are clean; if water-cooled, ensure coolant is at proper level and there are no leaks.
-
Exhaust system : Check muffler/silencer and exhaust piping for integrity and appropriate discharge away from operator areas.
-
Load testing : Periodically run the generator under load (not just idle) to ensure all systems function properly, and to prevent stagnation issues.
-
General inspections : Check for loose bolts, vibration, wear and tear, wiring connections, canopy/housing (if enclosed) for corrosion or damage.
-
Record keeping : Maintain a log book of run hours, service dates, oil changes, issues encountered—helps plan preventative maintenance and detect trends.
-
Service network : Use Kirloskar authorized service centers for major maintenance or when engine/alternator parts need replacement to ensure compatibility and support.
