Description
The KG4-P-5.5AS from Kirloskar’s Portable Sentinel series is a compact, single-phase diesel generator set rated at approximately 5.5 kVA output at 230 V / 50 Hz. According to the Sentinel series brochure, the “5.5 kVA” rating corresponds to the model KG4-P-5.5AS. It is designed for portable or standby power use where a modest capacity diesel backup is needed - combining the robustness of a diesel engine with relative portability and the trusted service network of the Kirloskar brand. Typical uses include homes, small businesses, mobile sites etc. The compact footprint, lower noise levels and diesel-fuel economy make this model suitable for many scenarios.

Features

 :
  • Rated Output: ~5.5 kVA at 230 V, 50 Hz (single phase) per the spec sheet.
  • Fuel Type: Diesel engine variant (unlike petrol versions in the series) - which typically gives better fuel economy and longer runtime for standby/continuous use.
  • Fuel Tank Capacity: 12.5 litres standard for this portable Sentinel series (as shown in the brochure).
  • Fuel Consumption: According to the spec sheet for the 5.5 kVA variant: at “100% load” ~1.69 L/hr, at “50% load” ~1.07 L/hr.
  • Noise Level: The brochure indicates for this size < 75 dB(A) or < 86 LWA depending on canopy/enclosure version.
  • Engine Model: Based on the spec sheet, one of the engine models listed is “CC 418 G1” for 5.5 kVA in the range.
  • Starting System: Electric start (battery) provided - making it easier to operate in standby/emergency scenarios.
  • Compact Design: Dimensions for the series: approx. 950 × 595 × 855 mm for the 5.5 kVA model.
  • Low THD / Clean Output: The spec sheet shows % THD (voltage) < 5% for this series.
  • Brand & Service Network: Being from Kirloskar, there is a wide service/spare parts network in India, which enhances reliability of ownership.

Applications

 :
  • Residential backup power : For homes or apartments during power cuts - able to support lighting, fans, TVs, refrigerators and other essential appliances.
  • Small business / retail shops : For boutiques, kiosks, clinics, small offices needing reliable standby power for computers, lighting, security CCTV, small loads.
  • Outdoor & mobile use : For temporary events, mobile workshops, exhibition stalls, remote field sites where mains power is unavailable or unreliable.
  • Agriculture / rural use : In rural settings where grid supply is intermittent, for tasks like lighting, pumps (within load limits), ventilation, remote operations.
  • Light industrial / small-workshop support : For light machining, small motors, tools (within ~5.5 kVA capacity) where three-phase heavy loads are not required. Because this model offers ~5.5 kVA output, it is not intended for heavy industrial loads, large three-phase motor drives or full-factory installations - those require much higher kVA ratings.

Usage

 :
Usage :
  • Site selection : Install the generator in a dry, level, well-ventilated outdoor or semi-outdoor location. Ensure exhaust gases are directed away from inhabited spaces.
  • Pre-start checks : Check engine oil level, coolant level (if applicable), battery charge, fuel level. Make sure all load connections are disconnected initially, and move the genset to “ready” or standby mode.
  • Starting : Use the electric start to fire up the unit. Allow the engine to run unloaded (no major connected load) for 1-2 minutes to warm up. Gradually apply load; avoid sudden full load at cold start.
  • Loading : Ensure the connected load stays within the rated capacity (~5.5 kVA), plus a margin for motor start surges. Balance the load (even though single phase, avoid large single spikes) and use correct sizing of cables, circuit breakers, etc. Monitor voltage/frequency during use; ensure stable output especially if powering sensitive equipment.
  • Operation : Keep the area around the genset unobstructed for ventilation. Monitor for any abnormal noise, smoke, vibration or overheating. For sensitive electronics, even though THD is low (<5%), consider using a surge protector or UPS for added safety.
  • Shutdown : Disconnect the load first, allow the genset to run lightly for ~1-2 minutes, then shut it off. If storing for long period, drain fuel or treat fuel as per manufacturer’s guidance, disconnect battery if necessary.
  • Safety : Ensure proper earthing/grounding of the genset and load side. Use correct protective devices: MCBs/overload protection, appropriate cable sizing, and follow local electrical codes. Keep the genset away from flammable materials, provide fire extinguisher nearby, and ensure safe exhaust routing.

Maintenance :
  • Oil change : As per the series brochure: first oil change after 20 hours, then every 100 hours for similar models in this range.
  • Air filter: Regularly inspect the air filter (especially if used in dusty or outdoor environments). Clean or replace as needed.
  • Fuel system : Use clean diesel fuel. If the genset is to be stored for a long time, drain the tank or add fuel stabiliser. Check for any fuel leaks or water contamination.
  • Battery (electric start system): Keep the battery charged, terminals clean and tight. Check for electrolyte levels (if applicable) and replace when aging.
  • Cooling / ventilation: If the engine is air-cooled ensure fins are clean; if liquid cooled ensure coolant levels are maintained and radiator is unobstructed.
  • Exhaust / muffler : Check regularly for leaks, secure mountings, ensure the muffler is intact and exhaust pathway is clear.
  • Periodic load test: Run the genset under load occasionally (not just idle) to ensure all parts are exercised and to avoid problems arising from long idle time.
  • General inspection : Check for loose bolts, vibration, wiring integrity, mounting condition, canopy/housing (if fitted) for corrosion or damage.
  • Record keeping : Maintain a log of run hours, oil changes, servicing, load hours, so you can detect trends (e.g., increasing fuel consumption, more frequent maintenance) and plan proactive maintenance.
  • Use authorized parts & service : Given the brand’s support network, using genuine filters, oil and spares and scheduling service through authorized Kirloskar dealers helps maintain warranty and reliability.
  • Storage : If the genset is not going to be used for a long period : store in a dry, sheltered place; drain fuel or treat it; disconnect battery; cover to protect from dust/rodents; check periodically.
