Description
The Reliant Lab Lee’s and Charlton’s Apparatus is a precision thermodynamic instrument specifically designed to determine the coefficient of thermal conductivity of bad conductors, such as glass, ebonite, or rubber. Unlike Searle's apparatus, which is used for metals, this setup is optimized for materials that resist heat flow. It consists of a thick brass base plate and a hollow brass steam chamber between which a thin specimen of the bad conductor is sandwiched. By measuring the steady state temperature gradient and the subsequent cooling rate of the brass slab, the thermal conductivity of the material can be calculated with high accuracy.
Features
:- High Mass Brass Slab: Features a thick, circular brass base plate that acts as a heat sink with high thermal capacity for stable cooling measurements.
- Polished Thermal Interfaces: Both the steam chamber and the base slab are precision ground and polished to ensure perfect thermal contact with the test specimen.
- Integrated Thermometer Ports: Equipped with two dedicated radial holes for thermometers to monitor the temperature of both the steam chamber and the brass slab simultaneously.
- Versatile Specimen Compatibility: Designed to test a wide variety of thin disc materials, including glass, wood, plastics, and various insulating composites.
Applications
:- Newton’s Law of Cooling: Used to demonstrate and apply the law of cooling by observing the rate at which the brass slab loses heat to the atmosphere.
- Heat Transfer Education: A fundamental experiment for undergraduate students to understand the difference between steady-state and transient heat flow.
- Building Material Testing: Helping students evaluate the efficiency of various industrial insulators used in construction and refrigeration.
- Material Characterization: Investigating how the thickness of a material affects its overall thermal resistance and heat flux.
