1. Seed Collection & Selection
- Seed source: Mature teak trees (over 20 years old).
- Fruit type: Hard nut (drupe) with 1–4 seeds inside.
- Collection time: December to May (when fruits fall naturally).
- Storage: Seeds can be stored up to 1–2 years in a cool, dry place.
2. Seed Pre-treatment (to improve germination)
Teak seeds have hard outer shells and poor natural germination (20–30%). Pre-treatment is essential.
Best method (traditional hot water treatment):
- Boil water and then remove from heat.
- Pour the hot (not boiling) water over the seeds.
- Soak for 12 hours.
- Drain and dry the seeds in shade for 2 days before sowing.
Alternative method (soaking in cold water):
- Soak seeds in normal water for 48 hours, changing water every 12 hours.
3. Sowing Time
- Ideal months: June–July (with onset of monsoon).
- Nursery sowing can start in May, to transplant seedlings by July–August.
4. Nursery Bed Preparation
- Prepare raised beds: 1 m wide × convenient length × 15 cm high.
- Mix soil + sand + compost in 2:1:1 ratio.
- Maintain good drainage.
5. Seed Sowing Method
- Direct sowing: Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in rows spaced 15 cm apart.
- Cover lightly with soil or sand.
- Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.
6. Germination Details
- Germination starts after 15–30 days and may continue up to 60 days.
- Germination rate: 30–50% (with good pre-treatment).
- Shade should be provided for young seedlings.
7. Transplanting
When seedlings are 30–40 cm tall (around 3–4 months), transplant them into:
- Poly bags (20 × 25 cm) for 3–6 more months, or
- Main field (for direct planting).
8. Field Planting
- Spacing: 3 m × 3 m (≈ 450 plants per acre).
- Pit size: 45 × 45 × 45 cm.
- Fill pits with topsoil + FYM or compost before planting.
- Planting season: Onset of monsoon.
9. Irrigation & Care
- Light watering for 2–3 months after transplanting.
- Weeding every 3–4 months in the first 2 years.
- Apply organic manure once or twice a year to promote growth.
10. Growth & Yield
- Teak starts heartwood formation from 10–12 years.
- Rotation period: 20–25 years for timber harvest.
- Yields about 100–150 cubic feet of timber per acre under good management.
Description
Burma Teak (Tectona grandis) treated seeds offer an excellent opportunity for investors, farmers, and forestry enthusiasts. Known as the "King of Hardwoods," teak produces high-value timber that appreciates with time. Treat-treated seeds ensure higher germination success, making cultivation more accessible even for commercial plantations.
