A grass cutting machine is a machine that uses spinning blades to cut the grass on a lawn to an even height. It saves a lot of time and effort compared to cutting grass with hand tools.
What to Consider Before Buying a Grass Cutting Machine?
Know Your Lawn Size
The size of your garden is the most important factor when choosing a machine. If you have a small lawn, about the size of a tennis court or smaller, a standard push mower is perfect. It is lightweight, affordable, and easy to store. For a medium-sized yard, a self-propelled mower works better because the engine moves the wheels for you. You only need to steer rather than push. If you have a very large property or an open field, consider a riding mower. This type allows you to sit while working, saving you time and energy.
Choose the Power Source
You need to choose how you want to power the machine based on your needs. Corded electric mowers work well for small areas close to your house, but the cord can get tangled around trees or limit how far you can move. Battery-powered mowers fix this issue by providing complete freedom of movement and are very quiet. Just make sure the battery lasts long enough to finish your entire yard. Gas-powered mowers are the classic choice for maximum power. They can easily cut through thick grass and run for a long time. However, they are noisy, require you to buy fuel, and need more upkeep than electric models.
Check the Terrain
The shape of your lawn is just as important as its size. If your lawn is completely flat, almost any regular mower will work well. However, if you have hills or steep slopes, it's best to steer clear of heavy push mowers. Instead, opt for a self-propelled mower with rear-wheel drive, as these offer better grip when going uphill. For yards that are uneven or have rough areas, choose a mower with "high wheels" in the back. Larger wheels roll over uneven ground much more smoothly than smaller ones.
What Happens to the Cut Grass?
Different mowers handle grass clippings in various ways. Many modern machines offer a "3-in-1" function. You can choose a mower with a bagger, which collects all the clippings as you mow. This leaves your lawn looking neat and tidy. Alternatively, you can use the side discharge option. This feature shoots the grass out of the side and works well for cutting tall, rough grass where looks are less important. The best option for your lawn is mulching. In this method, the machine chops the grass into small pieces and returns them to the soil to decompose and act as natural fertilizer.
Key Features to Look For
Finally, check for features that make the job easier. The "deck size" indicates how wide the mower cuts in one pass. A wider deck lets you finish faster, but it can be heavier to handle. If you have trouble pulling a heavy cord to start a gas engine, look for a model with an electric push-button start. It’s also a good idea to buy a mower with a washout port. This lets you connect a garden hose to clean the grass stuck under the blades easily.
